Fresno State had the most improvement of any team in college football this season. In 2016, the Bulldogs won just one game. This year, they won eight more and finished first in the Mountain West Conference West Division.

This is Fresno State’s first bowl appearance since 2014, when it lost to Rice in the Hawaii Bowl. The Bulldogs also played in this game in 2012, when they lost to SMU.

Fresno State has a 10-13 all-time record in bowl games.

One defensive standout for the Bulldogs is linebacker Jeffrey Allison, who was a first-team All-Mountain West Conference selection with 113 tackles.

Houston has 37 wins since the start of the 2014 season, the second most by an FBS team from Texas during that stretch (TCU has 38). The Cougars finished second in the American Athletic Conference West Division this season.

The Cougars are playing in a bowl game for the fifth consecutive season. They own an 11-13 all-time record in bowl games. They lost to San Diego State in the Las Vegas Bowl last season, but had won their bowl game the two previous years — victories over Pittsburgh and Florida State in the Armed Forces Bowl and Peach Bowl, respectively.

Houston defensive tackle Ed Oliver was named the AAC Defensive Player of the Year, collecting 5.5 sacks and 14.5 tackles for loss this season.
